DAY 65

I was able to convince my mom to get me the 23 and me kit for Christmas while it was on sale for Black Friday, so saved around $90 and I’m thinking for Christmas, I’ll pay her back and then some. I did an adult thing and actually FINALLY filed my taxes, so I should get a good chunk in the next few weeks. Hopefully sooner rather than later. I NEED MONEY!

ANYWAY. I got the kit SUPER fast and spit into it a bunch of times. You have to make sure you haven’t eaten or drank in the last half hour. I’d had a 2 hour nap beforehand, so I should be good. A friend of mine said she had to do it twice because the first one didn’t have enough DNA somehow. I actually scraped the roof of my mouth with my tongue.

So my parents, before doing this, said that we are German (or Polish?) and French, some Irish (or Scottish?). Knowing that I have naturally curly hair, in fact, all my mom’s side has naturally curly hair, I am curious to know where that comes from. I don’t think we look traditionally German, and I found out that my dad’s French roots are French Canadian, and before our family was from France, they were from Germany. I don’t know if any of this is interesting to ANYONE but me, but I’m excited to find out.

I did the full 23 and me kit, so I’m hoping to find out ALL THE THINGS. I wanna know everything, good or bad. I’m the kind of person who likes to be prepared for what’s to come. But I’m also a really impulsive person… Are these mutually exclusive traits?

Anyway, I’ll reveal my results when they pop in!

DEC 3RD.
______

December 26th.

Got my results! So…

I am

48.6% British

22.3% French/German

3.9% Scandinavian

1.9% Italian

0.3% North African and Arabian

0.1% East Asian and Native American

and basically the rest is some unknown European.

Basically, I am very white. I had originally thought we were German, French and Polish, so it’s interesting to know that I’m mostly British... I don’t know how that works.

I found about 1025 relatives online, but none of them are particularly close. All cousins. They at least prove that my dad is my dad and my mom is my mom, because they are cousins from each of their sides, so that’s a relief.

As for my health results, it all looks really good. I don’t have any significant risks for certain diseases, except for Celiac’s Disease which I don’t even have. I have a slight increased risk of getting harmful blood clots, so that is good to know.

The more interesting facts(Maybe only to me..):

Processes alcohol normally

Sounds about right. I also don’t get hangovers easily.

More likely to consume more caffeine than average

Sounds about right.

Less likely to be a deep sleeper

Maybe? I do have deep sleeps often and when I do have wild as fuck dreams.

Predisposed to weigh less than average

I weigh exactly average.

Genetic muscle composition is common in elite power athletes

This surprises me because I have never been interested in being an athlete at all and never felt like I had an advantage, but I do have naturally really muscular legs.

Move around more than average during sleep

I never wake up in the same position as I fell asleep.

More likely to match a musical pitch

Thank goodness!

Likely can smell asparagus in urine

Um… Never tried to sniff my pee afterwards but I’ll try one day.

Likely to taste certain bitter flavours

I was really sensitive as a kid to bitter flavours.

Unlikely to have dimples

No dimples.

Slightly higher odds of disliking cilantro

I do think it tastes like soap, but I like it.

Likely to have wet earwax

Ew. Wet or dry, earwax is always gross.

Likely to have brown or hazel eyes

I have hazel eyes.

Less likely to be afraid of heights

I am not afraid of heights but I am very afraid of falling

Average odds of having Misophonia

I do have misophonia. I get reeeeally angry when I hear incessant noises. Chewing, knocking, loud talking… I could punch a bitch.

More likely to get more mosquito bites than others

Well fuck.

More likely to prefer salty over sweet

I like everything. I always need to have both. I’m a libra.

More likely to have straight or wavy hair

Okay this is where it was definitely wrong. Most of my family has curly hair, especially my mom’s side. I was hoping that my genetics would have something to add about my curly hair, but it doesn’t, at all. Lame.

And the coolest thing of all.

I have 284 Neanderthal variants in my DNA. Less than 4% of my overall DNA, but still, that’s quite a bit! I don’t know why, but I think that’s soo cool. It’s more than 64% of all the other 23andMe participants, so it seems like a lot to me, somehow. I wonder if one day they’ll share what specific traits they are. I wanna know this stuff.

I think after taking this, it’s kinda nice to know that I don’t have any serious risks to worry about. I apparently don’t carry any serious diseases in my DNA to pass on to any children, so I could end up having pretty genetically healthy children, but I don’t even want children… It kinda feels like a shame. I wonder if I can donate my super awesome eggs to someone to have my biological children for me. You can’t make money off of donating your eggs in Canada which is SO LAME.

Who knows, maybe I will change my mind about kids someday. If I do, I would want my partner to do the 23 and Me test so we can both know what our contributions to our children will look like. I kinda wish I could experimentally find out what a kid could turn out like if I just mish-mashed my DNA with any dude. I watched some girls playing the Sims 4 do that and it was pretty fascinating. It’s a challenge called Breed out the Weird. Now I wanna play Sims 4...
